Self-custody means that you, and nobody else, control the private keys that move your bitcoin. If you hold your own keys, no bank, exchange or payment company can freeze your funds, reverse a transfer or close your account. Self-custody gives you the same freedom that cash gives you, and the same responsibility. The same rule works against you. If the keys are lost, stolen or destroyed, nobody can recover the coins for you, including the company that built your wallet. Most modern wallets create a seed phrase, usually twelve or twenty-four words in a fixed order, from which every key can be derived. Anyone who knows those words can take the funds, so the phrase should never leave your control. Write it down on paper or metal, keep copies in more than one safe place, and never type it into a website, into an app that asks for it, or into a message from someone who claims to be support. A hardware wallet adds a second layer of protection, because the signing keys stay on a small device and each transaction must be confirmed on its screen. Software wallets are convenient and suitable for small amounts, but they run on a computer or phone that may be infected with malware. Self-custody is not a guarantee of safety, and it is not a reason to skip backups. It is a trade: you accept full responsibility in exchange for full control. For many people, the simplest way to make that trade safely is to send a small amount first, test a restore on a second device and write the steps down in their own words.
